What To Do
- Take suicide threats seriously
- Ask questions
- Listen in a non-judgmental way – “I’m here for you,” “Let’s talk”
- Take action – get the individual connected with professional help by telling a trusted adult (counselors, parents, coaches, neighbors, religious figures, etc.)

What NOT To Do
- Keep suicide threats a secret
- Act shocked or condemn
- Point out how much better off they are than others
- Interject your own problems and feelings
- Suggest drugs and alcohol as a solution
- Minimize the person’s feelings and offer simple solutions
- Leave the person alone
- Try to be a therapist – get professional help
