What To Do

  • Take suicide threats seriously
  • Ask questions
  • Listen in a non-judgmental way – “I’m here for you,” “Let’s talk”
  • Take action – get the individual connected with professional help by telling a trusted adult (counselors, parents, coaches, neighbors, religious figures, etc.)

What NOT To Do

  • Keep suicide threats a secret
  • Act shocked or condemn
  • Point out how much better off they are than others
  • Interject your own problems and feelings
  • Suggest drugs and alcohol as a solution
  • Minimize the person’s feelings and offer simple solutions
  • Leave the person alone
  • Try to be a therapist – get professional help
